In light of recent discussions surrounding social issues in sports, I want to dive into a topic that has been both historically significant and painfully relevant: anti-Semitism in baseball. Ron Kaplan's recent reflection on his book Hank Greenberg in 1938: Hatred and Home Runs in the Shadow of War brings to the forefront the struggles faced by Jewish players in a time of rampant prejudice.
As we see echoes of this discrimination resurfacing in today's society, it begs the question: how far have we really come in addressing racism and anti-Semitism in sports? Are we merely repeating history, or are we making genuine progress?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the following:
- How do you think the experiences of players like Hank Greenberg can inform our understanding of current issues in sports?
- Do you believe that the sports community is doing enough to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination today? What more can be done?
- Have you witnessed any significant changes in how teams and leagues address these issues over the years?
Let’s also make some bold predictions: will we see a major league player openly confront anti-Semitism in the same way that some have tackled racism? What impact could that have on the sport and its fans?
